- 2018 Mom and Dad Movies Preview
Last week, I gave you a sneak preview of some potentially worthwhile family movies coming up in the next few weeks. Well, mom and dad, today it’s your turn: Enjoy this 2018 Mom and Dad Movies Preview.
Whether your tastes run from the mainstream to the obscure, I have a first look at some of the features that might fit the bill for an upcoming date night or an evening the kids are spending the night with grandma and grandpa.
I’ve come up with quite a diverse line-up for the next few months – movies that will make you laugh, make you cry and possibly scare you silly.
Adult-themed films didn’t seem to set the world on fire during the first third of the year, one notable exception being A QUIET PLACE, the thriller directed by John Krasinski, best known as Jim Halpert to all you OFFICE fans out there. It was made for $17 million and to date has brought in $258 million worldwide, which is absolutely astounding. Having seen it recently, I definitely give it a hardy recommendation. Aside from being a solid thriller, it is also a film that focuses on the importance of family and the lengths you’ll go to in order to protect those you love.
Back to the subject at hand, the films will be listed below in chronological order. Please remember that release dates are subject to change.

Scheduled for release May 18, 2018
Four older women spend their lives attending a book club where they bond over the typical suggested literature. One day, they end up reading FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and are turned on by the content. Viewing it as a wake up call, they decide to expand their lives and chase pleasures that have eluded them. The cast couldn’t be any better – the four leading ladies between them have amassed four Oscars, six Emmys, and countless other awards and nominations. The film also features Craig T. Nelson, Don Johnson, Oscar-nominee Andy Garcia and Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss. This could be a sleeper hit attracting those viewers who enjoyed films like THE FIRST WIVES CLUB and THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL.

When the matriarch of the Graham family dies, her daughter Annie suspects a presence was left behind, which has a bizarre focus on her teenage daughter Charlie. With the household under threat by a supernatural force, Annie must explore the darkness to escape their inherited fate. I normally don’t include films like this in my previews, but this movie has been garnering extraordinary buzz since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year. It currently has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and Toni Collette is said to be absolutely amazing and has already started garnering Oscar talk for her performance.
A KID LIKE JAKE
Scheduled for release June 8, 2018
On the eve of the admissions cycle for New York City kindergartens, Alex and Greg Wheeler have high hopes for their son Jake, a bright and precocious 4-year-old who happens to prefer Cinderella to GI Joe. As Alex and Greg navigate their roles as parents, a rift grows between them, one that forces them to confront their own concerns about what’s best for Jake and each other. Director Silas Howard is probably best known for directing episodes of the critically acclaimed series TRANSPARENT, and this film, based on the book of the same name by Daniel Pearle, features Claire Danes and Jim Parsons as Jake’s parents, along with Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer and Emmy-winner Ann Dowd.
WOMAN WALKS AHEAD

Catherine Weldon, a portrait painter from 1890s Brooklyn, travels to Dakota to paint a portrait of Sitting Bull and becomes embroiled in the Lakota peoples’ struggle over the rights to their land. The film is directed by Susanna White, whose last film was the British spy thriller OUR KIND OF TRAITOR, and features performances from Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain and Sam Rockwell, who just won Best Supporting Actor earlier this year for THREE BILLBOARD OUTSIDE EBBING MISSOURI. The film actually had its premiere last fall at the Toronto Film Festival where it received mixed reviews.
Scheduled for release August 17, 2018
